Kaseya Expands MSP Reach by Acquiring Unitrends

Kaseya today significantly expanded its control over the core technologies that many managed service providers (MSPs) rely on by acquiring Unitrends, a provider of data protection platform that will continue to operate as an independent arm of Kaseya.

The acquisition of Unitrends will be followed shortly by other acquisitions in the areas of cybersecurity and compliance, promises Kaseya CEO Fred Voccola. The acquisition comes on the heels of a technology alliance the two companies formed earlier this year.

Via acquisitions and reseller agreements Kaseya is maneuvering into a position to become the equivalent of a central point through which technologies become acquire by MSPs, says Voccola.

Kaseya already resells backup and recovery software from Acronis, Veeam, Datto, StorageCraft, and others. Kaseya will continue to provide access to the products alongside Unitrends because managed service providers (MSPs) need to be able to provide customers with access to products and technologies they demand.

As a provider of an appliance that gets deployed in a local data center, Voccola notes that Unitrends is complementary to cloud-based data protection platforms such as Acronis, adds Voccola.

Unitrends, adds Voccola, has focused most of its efforts on end users rather than MSPs. Unitends has over 12,000 customers. Kaseya, meanwhile, has over 16,000 MSPs using its platform, so the opportunity to cross-sell services is significant, says Voccola.

Kaseya, a provider of a platform widely used by MSPs to manage their operations, is evolving into a vehicle through which multiple products are sold to MSPs that standardize on the platform. By providing integration with the Kaseya platform those products ultimately become preferred by MSPs that would rather not have to do any custom integration to support products that are not part of the extended portfolio of Kaseya supported offerings.

“Everything is fully integrated before they buy them,” says Voccola.

It remains to be seen how much impact MSP platforms such as Kaseya will have on market share in any given product category. But the one thing that is already clear is that MSPs have at least the potential to move a significant amount of market share from one vendor to another by simply making a recommendation to a customer that happens to align with their own best interests.
