Atera, a provider of a platform for managing the delivery of IT services, this week announced it has partnered with Splashtop to make it simpler for remote workers to access applications residing on desktops in their office.
That capability is now crucial as more workers are required to work from home to combat the COVID-19 pandemic, says Tal Dagen, vice president of product for Atera.
Under the terms of the alliance, managed service providers (MSPs) that use the Atera platform will be able to push the agent software required to employ Splashtop to access desktop applications.
It will be up to each individual MSP to determine to what degree they may want to charge for the capability to recover their costs or provide this capability as a way to encourage customers to continue to rely on an MSP at a time when many businesses are now under extreme financial pressure, adds Dagen.
“It should help customers remain loyal,” said Dagen.
With more employees working from home there can be no doubt MSPs and internal IT teams alike are struggling to keep pace with a massive spike in help desk calls. Many MSPs are in a unique position to help many organizations by augmenting service desks or taking over complete management of that function.
The challenge MSPs face is many of them may not be certain they will ever get paid for delivering that service. Savvy MSPs may want to make available services that can be consumed on a monthly basis versus requiring end customers to commit to annual contracts, adds Dagen.
It’s unclear to what degree the current shift toward working from home may represent the “new normal.” Many organizations have been slowing transitioning toward relying more on remote workers in the age of the cloud. The COVID-19 pandemic may in the long term accelerate the rate at which that transition was already occurring.
