Barracuda Networks Adds Cybersecurity Tools to RMM Platform

Barracuda Networks is starting to embed security and data  management capabilities into the platform for delivering managed services that it acquired from Avast Software earlier this year.

One of the primary reasons Barracuda Networks acquired the Managed Workplace remote monitoring and management (RMM) platform is that it’s become obvious that managed service providers (MSPs) are being required to provide cybersecurity service alongside every other IT service they currently provide, says Brian Babineau, senior vice president and general manager at Barracuda MSP, an arm of Barracuda Networks focused specifically on MSP partners.

Not only do customers want MSPs to secure their IT environments, Babineau notes that whenever possible they would also rather not have to engage a separate MSP to gain access to cybersecurity services.

To help MSP achieve that goal, version 12 of Managed Workplace adds patch management capabilities and other tools for streamlining software updates via an Advanced Software Management module. In addition, the RMM platform policy-based monitoring capabilities for the backup processes based on the Barracuda Intronis Backup service.

The latest version of Managed Workplace is only the beginning of additional integrations between the RMM platform and the rest of the Barracuda Networks portfolio, says Babineau.

“They’ll be a lot of cross-engineering effort,” says Babineau.

While there are plenty of more established MSP Platforms, the need to embrace cybersecurity at a deeper level is likely to draw increased attention in the direction of the Managed Workplace platform. The challenge Barracuda Networks faces is that many MSPs have already committed to other MSP platforms. Convincing MSPs to switch out an RMM platform they have been relying on for years is exceedingly difficult. However, there’s also a raft of emerging MSPs that have yet to standardize on a specific RMM platform or are just now looking to move away from an RMM platform they may have custom built themselves.

Whatever the reason, Barracuda Networks is aiming to claim a larger share of an MSP platform market that previous owners of the Managed Workplace platform found tough to crack.
