Commvault today unveiled an alliance with NetApp along with a raft of new offerings that includes a set of cloud-based data protection services.
Announced at the Commvault GO 2018 conference, the alliance with NetApp extends Commvault technology partnerships to include Cisco, Hewlett-Packard Enterprise (HPE) and INFINIDAT in terms of on-premise deployments and Google, and Microsoft in the cloud.
The NetApp alliance now makes Commvault software the primary means for providing data protection on NetApp storage systems. At the same time, Commvault also announced today it had extended its alliance with HPE to now include integration between Commvault Complete Backup and Recovery Software and HPE StoreOnce storage systems.
Other new offerings include cloud services spanning Commvault Complete B&RaaS, a comprehensive cloud service as well as Commvault Complete B&RaaS for Virtual Machines designed to back up virtual machines running on Microsoft Azure and Amazon Web Services (AWS) public clouds, and Commvault Complete B&RaaS for Native Cloud Applications designed for software-as-a-service (SaaS) applications.
Commvault also announced two additions to its family of appliances that are aimed at larger enterprise and remote offices and Commvault Activate, which combines machine learning algorithms and the Commvault index to locate and apply polices against specific sets of data regardless of where they might be stored.
Finally, Commvault unveiled the Commvault Command Center, which employs machine learning algorithms and analytics to automate task and identify anomalies indicative of a need to alter a data management policy.
The goal from a channel perspective is to make it simpler for partners participating in the channel programs of any of the IT vendors that Commvault has partnered with to attach Commvault products and services to any sale, says Scott Strubel, vice president of worldwide channels for Commvault.
“They don’t need to become a partner of Commvault if they don’t want to,” says Strubel.
However, if they do choose to join a much streamlined Commvault channel program, Strubel says they can take advantage of investments Commvault has made in everything from marketing to making available special pricing quotes in a matter of minutes to a few hours.
As Commvault continues to expand the number of data protection alliances, it’s clear that potential rivals such as Cisco, NetApp, and HPE now view Commvault as a strategic partner in a battle with rivals spanning dozens of alternative approaches to data protection. The challenge facing Commvault now is getting channel partners of Cisco, NetApp, HPE and other to appreciate that relationship.
