Boomi to Expand into Realm of Business Insights

Boomi, a unit of Dell Technologies, signaled this week it is moving into the realm of business analytics as it continues to collect metadata from all the processes its integration platform connects.

Steve Wood, chief product officer for Dell Boomi, told attendees at the Boomi World 2019 conference that the provider of a cloud service based on an integrated platform-as-a-service (iPaaS) environment will be employing the anonymized metadata it collects to build a massive data lake.

At the core of that capability are application programming interfaces (APIs) and a fabric platform that enable Boomi to view and read data residing on top of an Atom runtime connected to the Boomi cloud service.

“Boomi is now in the business of insights,” says Wood. “We can connect everything in real time.”

Boomi is also going to make available software development kits (SDKs) that will make it possible for partners and developers to build their own Boomi connectors, adds Wood. At the same time, Boomi is also moving to advance the adoption of best DevOps processes among its customer base to accelerate the development and deployment of Atom run-times.

On top of that foundation, Wood says Boomi will also expand its investment in artificial intelligence (AI) to not only surface suggestions on how to connect data sources, but also what types of filters should be applied. This and other process integration and analytics capabilities will also be accessible via both graphical and conversational interfaces. This week Boomi highlighted a partnership with Accenture through which speech interfaces are being added to the Boomi iPaaS service.

To help get partners and customers ready for this brave new world, Boomi this week also launched Boomiverse, a community that Boomi hopes will lead to an increase in the number of IT professionals that have Boomi certifications. In the last two years, Boomi has increased the number of certifications being attained from about five a day to now more than 40 as it makes a concerted effort to increase the amount of iPaaS integration expertise available to customers.

It’s not clear to what degree moving Boomi beyond simple connectivity will increase the size of a Boomi ecosystem that already consists of more than 9,000 customers and 580 partners. However, given the interest in all things relating to digital business transformation these days, chances are high that this time next year the number of Boomi partners participating in that ecosystem will be substantially higher.
