Siemens is now looking to build an ecosystem around the low-code application development and deployment platform it gained by acquiring Mendix last year.
The Mendix platform is now the preferred development tool for building applications on the MindSphere cloud platform that Siemens created to drive development of Internet of Things (IoT) applications, says Mendix CEO Derek Roos.
To achieve that goal, Siemens is now making available Xcelerator, a suite of tools and services built on top of Mendix to accelerate application development.
At the same time, Siemens has announced it is rebranding Siemens Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) Software as Siemens Digital Industries Software to better reflect its goal to build an ecosystem to drive digital business transformation initiatives using a variety of Siemens tools and services that have now been more tightly integrated.
Siemens is clearly trying to marshal its disparate resources to accelerate the development of IoT applications that it views as being core to any digital business transformation initiative. In addition to providing the tools to build those applications, the Mendix platform comes with artificial intelligence (AI) and microservices-based frameworks baked into the core platform, says Roos.
“The vision we had 12 months ago has now become a reality,” says Roos.
The challenge organizations face is there is a chronic shortage of developers to build those applications. Mendix is making a case for overcoming that skills gap by employing a low code platform to enable both professional and citizen developers to build more applications faster.
A survey of more than 1,000 business and IT leaders conducted by Dimensional Research on behalf of Mendix finds nearly two-thirds of business stakeholders (61%) say that less than half of their requests rise to the surface for IT implementation.
Not every one of those projects necessarily represents an opportunity for solution providers, but it does suggest there are a lot of unmet needs that channel partners capable of building applications quickly could be fulfilling.
