Kaseya Expands Scope of Management Reach

Kaseya, today at a Kaseya Connect 2018 conference, moved to unify network and endpoint management with the launch of Kaseya One, a next-generation platform that managed services providers (MSPs) can employ to integrate and automate a variety of IT services.

In addition, Kaseya earlier this week announced it is adding network management capabilities directly to the Kaseya VSA remote monitoring and management (RMM) platform. That effort will make it possible for managed service providers (MSPs) to add network monitoring capabilities to their existing endpoint management services at a nominal cost to their services portfolio at a nominal cost, says Kaseya CEO Fred Voccola. The networking monitoring software is based on the Traverse technology that Kaseya used to make available separately.

It’s not clear to what degree MSPs will be able to charge extra for network management services. MSPs are under pressure from end customers to deliver networking management services even though they are not willing to pay much extra for them, says Voccola. But MSPs that are not able to meet that demand will soon find themselves being usurped by rival MSPs that can provide both network and endpoint management services at a reasonable cost, says Voccola.

“This is going to be incredibly disruptive,” says Voccola.

Kaseya also plans to continue investing in machine learning algorithms to automate a wide variety of tasks that should collectively drive the cost of hiring technicians down further, says Voccola. Higher levels of automation are needed because the unemployment rate for IT professionals is effectively zero, says Voccola, which conspires to make it prohibitively expensive for MSPs to hire additional IT staff.

Kaseya One will provide the platform through which multiple services based on VSA and other third-party services are then unified. Kaseya, for example, also announced that partners are now integrating backup capabilities for Microsoft Office 365 as well as documentation capabilities into the VSA platform. Also, Kaseya showed how the Unitrends backup appliances the company acquired last week would be integrated with VSA as well.

Pricing competition between MSPs remains fierce even as the economy improves. Essentially, MSPs are being required to deliver more value for the same price. It’s not clear how many MSPs can withstand that pressure going forward. But those that fail to automate as much of their operations as possible are the least likely to survive.
